Searching the Chemical Literature at Sweet Briar College
[Susan Piepho's Websites]
Resources Accessible from the Library Home Page
From the Library home page (http://www.cochran.sbc.edu), go to Databases. Then choose All Databases.
Try the databases below (in the order listed).
In each case a VIVA page will come up first which should disappear in 3 or 4 seconds; if not, use the Click here to access
link to get to the actual database.
On-Line Access to Journals Published by the American Chemical Society
These may be accessed online from the Library Home Page as described above. Direct web link: American Chemical Society Jounrnals Online.
Chemical Abstract Searching using STNEasy
Web address: http://stneasy.cas.org/html/english/login1.html
A LOGIN name and PASSWORD are required. These may be obtained from the faculty in the Chemistry department.
Sweet Briar College has an academic account with STN. This gives us a 90% discount (we only pay 10% of the charges listed!), but our hours of access are limited. STNEasy may only be used during the following hours:
- 8:00 am (U.S. Eastern Time) Sunday --> 5:00 am (Local Time U.S.) Monday
- 5:00 pm (Local Time) --> 5:00 am the following day - Mondays-Fridays
- 5:00 pm (Local Time) Friday --> 6:00 pm (Eastern Time U.S.) Saturday
Search Pointers:
- If your search involves a chemical substance, first choose Chemical Substances (the default) and search for the CAS Number of the chemical name. You can then refine your search by using the "AND" option.
- Once you have set up the terms for your search, you will want to choose Chemical References to find literature references which match your criteria.
- Wildcards (*) are useful if you want to search for several related terms. For example, if you search for spectro*, the search would include spectrometry, spectrophotometric, spectroscopic, etc.
- Choose Search History to bring up a transcript of your entire search. The transcript can then be saved to disk or printed out.
- Be sure to logout when you have finished (if you forget the system will autologout after 15 minutes).
